The most advanced Itanium processor yet, "Tukwila" more than doubles the performance of its predecessor and adds a range of new scalability, reliability, and virtualization features. The fourth Intel Leibniz Challenge starts today, with the team topic of "Chip Design with focus on verification and examination." The contest, which is hosted by Intel and the Leibniz University Hanover and supported by the Initiative D2, aims to arouse the interest of pupils in natural and technical sciences and to introduce them to the profession of engineers. Since the beginning of the application period, more than 1,700 pupils have registered for the challenge. Among them there are teams from Brasil, Mexico, Poland and New Zealand as well as three teams from the United States. The registration for the contest is possible until February 28th, 2010.

Intel has launched the industry's first 10GBase-T server adapter to support SR-IOV for advanced network virtualization. This adapter's energy-efficient design allows it to support two 10GbE ports. Why two ports? 1) Two ports provide redundancy - one takes over if the other fails, and 2) ports can be combined into one bigger virtual pipe, providing 20GbE of networking bandwidth. Based on the Intel® 82599 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controller, the Intel® Ethernet Server Adapter X520-T2 supports connectivity over distances of up to 100 meters and includes enhancements for I/O virtualization and iSCSI. Today, Intel reported new solar power contracts are in place for eight U.S. locations in four states, generating approximately 2.5 megawatts of clean energy. Intel also increased its renewable energy credits by 10 percent, which is now more than half of its U.S. electricity use, and was named again at the top of the EPA Green Power list.
